Marari Villas FAQs

 

1.       Is the villa on the beach?

Palm, Bougainvillea and Lotus are on the beachfront. Orchid & Hibiscus are 300m from the beach (5 mins walk), but have private beach facilities (shower, sunbeds, umbrellas, hammocks, beach attendant service). It is 2km between our two locations: Orchid & Hibiscus at Pollathai and Palm, Bougainvillea and Lotus at Katoor.

 

2.       Is there beach access straight from the beachfront villas?

The beach in front of Palm, Lotus and Bougainvillea has recently been eroded by the sea and there are some rocks exposed in front of the villas. However, the beach and access to the sea is only maximum 100m further along the beach and the sandy beach continues from there for about 7km. You can also swim at the new pool at Lotus Villa that is shared for all guests staying at the beach villas.  

The sand continually shifts along the coast, so it may be pushed back in to cover the rocks again before your stay, but we wanted to inform you, just in case. You may request the pictures of the current situation by email or WhatsApp. We also offer complimentary transfers 2km along the coast to our private beach area at Orchid & Hibiscus, which is a beautiful part of the beach where we have sunbeds, hammocks, umbrellas, shower and beach attendant.

 

3.       Which villa is most appropriate for me?

With private pool and garden / 300m from beach, rural location:

Orchid sleeps 2 Adults / 1 Child

Hibiscus sleeps 2 Adults / 2 Children

 

With shared pool (in Lotus) / On the beachfront:  

Palm sleeps 6 Adults / 3 Children (2 rooms also available separately as a ‘shared villa’ option)

Bougainvillea sleeps 4 Adults / 2 Children (2 rooms also available separately as a ‘shared villa’ option)

Lotus sleeps 4 Adults / 2 Children (2 rooms also available separately as a ‘shared villa’ option)

 

Please note that it is 2km between our two locations: Orchid & Hibiscus at ‘Pollathai’ / Palm, Bougainvillea and Lotus at ‘Katoor’.

 

4.       Does the villa have a pool?

Orchid & Hibiscus each have private pools. Palm, Bougainvillea and Lotus have use of a shared pool at Lotus Villa.

 

5.       Getting There

We have an excellent English speaking driver who can meet you with our large AC Toyota Innova (6 seats). We strongly advise using our taxi service as there are many other properties with similar names and it is not easy to find our locations - even local drivers get it wrong! 6.       How far is Marari Villas from the airport?

Cochin airport is 75km (approximately 1½ -2 hours’ drive). Our English speaking driver can meet you and our superior taxi service provides complimentary WiFi, drinking water, Bluetooth music, child car seats, window shades, roof rack and cushions (oh, and a very calm and safe driver!).

 

7.       Which airlines fly to Cochin Airport?

Flights to Cochin Airport generally go via the Middle East or Mumbai/Bangalore. You can try the following (in order of preference, based on our experience and other guest feedback):

8.       Which is the nearest train station for Marari Villas?

Express trains stop at Alleppey (ALLP). You will require an Indian phone number and bank account to book train tickets online with Indian Railways www.irctc.co.in . If you don’t have these, you can book train tickets through a travel agent such as Carnival Tours in Cochin www.carnivaltourskochi.com

 

9.       Visas

e-Tourist Visas are now available online for many countries through https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html 

The e-TV system allows visas to be obtained online for tourism purpose between 4-124 days prior to arrival for a maximum of $60. You will need at least 6 months’ passport validity from the date of arrival and at least 2 blank pages. You should have a return/onward journey ticket and enough money to support you during your stay. An e-TV is valid for 60 days from the date of arrival.

There are a few unnecessary questions and the formatting for the photo (jpeg square format between 10KB-1MB) and passport scan (PDF format between 10KB-300KB) can be a bit troublesome.

Make sure you go to the e-Visa queue when you arrive at the airport, as they are processed separately.

 

10.   Early Check-in and Late Check-out

Early check-in is only available if you have booked the room for the previous day. We can arrange an airport pickup in the middle of the night and someone to show you your room on arrival at Marari Villas. Alternatively, there are a few airport hotels (Marriott Courtyard recommended) that offer very reasonable hourly rates and breakfast and we can then arrange a 10am taxi pick-up, so you can check-in with us at the usual 12pm.

Late checkout (up to 5pm) may be available, if confirmed in advance. It is charged at Rs.5,000 per room including lunch for 2 pax. Please advise us at the time of booking. Alternatively, if your flight leaves late, you can do a day tour of Fort Cochin on the way to the airport or we can arrange a day package at a nearby beach/backwater resort if we don’t have availability.

 

11.   Can you recommend houseboats and other accommodation?

Yes, we offer various Packages with our recommended boats, partner resorts/hotels and our taxi service. Contact us with your preferred dates and approximate budget per night and we can suggest a package for you. 

For your guidance on day cruise options:

-        A smaller ‘country boat’ that can travel in the smaller canals (choose between 2-5 hours), costs approximately Rs.700 per hour. Lunch and guided village walks available at additional cost. This can be with hand paddles for a true tranquil backwater experience (minimum 4 hours) or with an outboard motor so you can travel further and see more (min 2 1/2 hours). This can be arranged any time during your stay.

-        A 5 hour day cruise on a Houseboat (without overnight stay) with lunch, tea & snacks costs approximately Rs.10,000 for 2 pax.

 

12.   Do you cater for families and children?

Yes, we love having kids to stay! See our Family-friendly page for details of our extensive facilities, services and activities that will ensure you all have a memorable and stress-free family holiday.

 

13.   Is the sea safe for swimming?

Usually the sea is safe for any reasonable experienced swimmer between September to beginning of May. It is calmer in the mornings. There are no strong currents / rip tides once you get past the waves that break on the shore.

 

14.   Do you serve food?

Yes, each villa has a dedicated chef. Breakfast is included and lunch/dinner can be chosen from our menu (Kerala and Continental options). Most guests love our extensive 7 day ‘Kerala Delights’ menu that includes a traditional ‘Sadhya’ feast on banana leaf, seafood BBQ and toddy shop experience. We also have a ‘Kids Menu’ and our chefs can cater for food allergies/dietary requirements. We serve all food and drinks in the lounge/dining areas in each separate villa.

 

15.   Is alcohol available?

Yes. Kerala has strict alcohol licensing laws, but we can purchase drinks on your behalf and can stock the fridge in your villa – let us know if you have any particular requests.

 

16.   What activities can I do in the area?

There is plenty to do in the area if you don’t want to just eat / read / sleep / swim / sunbathe! See our Activities page for details of cooking classes, yoga classes, ayurveda massages, elephant rides, boat trips….

 

17.   Arranging Activities

You can arrange most activities with us when you arrive (yoga class, ayurveda massage, village tour, cooking class, market visit, bicycles etc.). However, if you require a longer term yoga and/or ayurveda package then we will need to agree the availability and rates with you in advance. Please email us to discuss the options. 

 

18.   Climate

 

August - October

22-30 °C / 72-86 °F. Cool and pleasant with warm nights. Possible showers in early August at tail-end of monsoon. North-east monsoon at the end of October or November with rains at night (sunny days). Perfect time for a lower cost Yoga Retreat in Kerala.

November - February

20-30 °C / 68-86 °F. Sunny and dry with cool nights and 8-9 hours of sunshine per day. The main tourist season with ideal climate.

March - May

28-36 °C / 82-97 °F. You will appreciate the sea breeze on the beach! Hot and humid in April/May, but ideal for a good yoga stretch! Good time for a lower cost Yoga Retreat.

June - July

26-32 °C.  Official Monsoon with tropical rain showers, dramatic skies and thunderstorms.  Weather can be quite unpredictable at this time of the year and you can get plenty of sunshine too! It is the perfect time for Ayurveda treatments and we can arrange a personal Ayurveda rejuvenation program for you at our Lotus Villa. Villas with pools are open - Orchid and Hibiscus (300m from beach) and Lotus on the beach.

 

 

19.   Booking Procedure and Payments

It is easy to book direct with us and we offer the best rates to our direct clients. We accept NEFT/RTGS Bank Transfers from Domestic Clients and Visa/Mastercard or Transferwise payments from International Clients. 

The booking procedure is as follows:

1.       Make a Reservation on our secure page 

2.       We will send you a Booking Confirmation with a link to the payment methods for the 50% deposit

3.       We will send you a confirmation email once we receive the deposit

4.       We will contact you 1 month prior to arrival for the 50% balance payment and arrival details
